Odisha Strengthens Aluminium Industry with Hindalco’s Mega Projects in Sambalpur
Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has taken a major step towards industrial self-reliance and advanced manufacturing. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday inaugurated India’s first Flat Rolled Products (FRP) unit and a specialised battery aluminium foil manufacturing unit of Hindalco Industries in Sambalpur district.
These projects mark a significant milestone for Odisha’s aluminium sector and support the country’s growing demand for electric vehicles, energy storage and renewable technologies.
₹27,000 Crore Industrial Push in Western Odisha
Along with the inaugurations, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for the expansion of the Aditya Aluminium Smelter, which will be developed at an investment of ₹21,162 crore.
Project Investment Breakdown
- Aluminium FRP Unit: ₹5,000 crore
- Battery Foil Manufacturing Unit: ₹834 crore
- Smelter Expansion: ₹21,162 crore
In total, Hindalco’s newly launched and upcoming projects in Sambalpur are valued at ₹26,996 crore, making it one of the largest industrial investments in Western Odisha.
Employment Generation and Local Growth
According to officials, these projects are expected to create 5,012 direct and indirect jobs, providing new livelihood opportunities for local youth. The initiatives will also strengthen downstream industries such as automotive components, packaging, defence manufacturing and renewable energy equipment.
The Chief Minister highlighted that real development is measured by employment, family security, and access to better education and healthcare, not just investment figures.
Boost to Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing in India
The newly commissioned FRP and battery-grade aluminium foil facilities will play a crucial role in localising raw materials for lithium-ion batteries. Together, they can support up to 100 GWh of battery cell manufacturing capacity.
This development is particularly important as India accelerates its electric mobility and energy storage plans. By producing battery-grade aluminium foil domestically, India can reduce its reliance on imports and improve supply chain stability.
Complete Aluminium Value Chain Within Odisha
One of the biggest advantages of this project is its integrated aluminium ecosystem. The battery foil unit draws raw material directly from the FRP complex, creating a seamless value chain from primary aluminium metal to advanced applications.
Key Sectors Benefiting
- Electric vehicles (EVs)
- Energy storage systems
- Defence manufacturing
- Flexible packaging
- Renewable energy infrastructure
Currently, nearly 40% of flat-rolled aluminium is imported. The expansion is expected to significantly cut import dependence and improve India’s manufacturing competitiveness.
Odisha’s Growing Industrial Vision
Addressing the event, CM Majhi said Western Odisha is transforming from a region known for forests and farmlands into a hub of world-class manufacturing. He added that Odisha is moving ahead with nearly ₹20 lakh crore worth of industrial proposals, which could generate around 15 lakh jobs once operational.
Industry Leaders Praise Odisha’s Role
Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, stated that Odisha has been central to the group’s industrial journey. Through Hindalco, the company aims to build a strong aluminium ecosystem focused on scale, value addition and sustainability.
Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries, said the Sambalpur expansion deepens Odisha’s presence across the aluminium value chain and drives long-term industrial growth within the state.
Enterprise Odisha Exhibition 2026 in Rourkela
Later in the day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the 25th edition of the CII Enterprise Odisha Exhibition 2026 in Rourkela. The expo showcases innovations, industrial capabilities and investment opportunities across sectors.
The inaugural evening featured a cultural programme and Rourkela’s first drone show, celebrating the cultural richness and industrial progress of Western Odisha.
